Large-Scale Art – Openness, Presence, and Space
Large-scale artworks change the experience of a room. They are not simply objects on a wall, but pictorial spaces that extend into their surroundings. A large format creates openness, depth, and the feeling of an expansive inner landscape—even in restrained contemporary interiors.
In Gregor Stehle's large-scale works, this effect arises from deliberate gestures, subtle accents, and the space between them. The works invite viewers into the stillness between forms, allowing the gaze to rest and thought to move toward a wider horizon.
There is a philosophical dimension to working at this scale. The larger the surface, the more the experience of space comes to the foreground. Rather than seeing only a picture, viewers encounter something akin to looking across a landscape, toward a lake, or into the sky. Large works engage the body as well as the eye: art becomes an environment rather than an isolated object.

In phenomenological approaches to perception, including those of Merleau-Ponty and Hermann Schmitz, space is more than measurable extension. It is also atmosphere: a felt relationship that surrounds us. In large-scale works this becomes especially tangible.
- Lines and surfaces become movements in space.
- Emptiness becomes an active element.
- Color becomes atmosphere rather than object.
- The gaze moves rather than fixing on one point.
This is why Stehle works on a large scale: to open spaces rather than fill them; to make openness perceptible rather than depict a subject; and to leave room for viewers to discover their own landscapes, horizons, and measures of stillness.
Large-scale art need not be loud. It can work quietly and deeply, bringing clarity, calm, and openness into a room.
