Color and Atmosphere

I work exclusively with the primary colors. They are given. With them, I initially make no decision. All other colors emerge through mixing.

The resulting color follows no plan. It resonates with an atmosphere that is already present. This atmosphere includes the place, the light, the day, my memories, thoughts, ideas, and states of mind. The subjective inner space is part of this atmosphere, not its origin.

With the application of color, a new process begins. Color, paper, emptiness, and perception enter into relation. They interact and alter one another. With every additional trace, not only the sheet changes, but the atmosphere of the entire situation.

Color is itself part of this atmosphere. It describes nothing. It changes the conditions under which something can appear.

Where color no longer describes but becomes part of a process, what I call art emerges—when it succeeds.
